Golden Hydrants Give Golden Showers?

San Francisco, CA

April 2013

At Church Street and 20th in San Francisco stands a fire hydrant. Not exactly something unusual for a city, but this one is special.

In the aftermath of the great earthquake of 1906, a vast majority of the water lines were ruptured and broken. This became a major problem when fire started to overtake the city.

Celebrated Hydrant

One of the few remaining working hydrants was located at this corner. And because it had water, it is credited with helping save much of the Mission District in the days following the quake. As part of the anniversary celebration in 2013, the hydrant was decked out with spring colors and flowers.
