Arkansas Baptist College

Founded in 1884 as the Minister's Institute, ABC was initially funded by the Colored Baptists of the State of Arkansas. It is the only Baptist HBCU west of the Mississippi River.


Arkansas State University

Founded: 1909 Arkansas State Univeristy
Nickname/Mascot: Red Wolves/ Howl
Colors: Scarlet, Black
Motto: Powering Minds
Location: Jonesboro
Celebrating it's centennial in 2009, the school just changed its mascot from the Indians, to the Red Wolves. Arkansas State University Seal


Central Baptist College

Founded: 1952 Central Baptist College
Nickname/Mascot: Mustangs/Lady Mustangs
Colors: Blue, Gray
Location: Conway
Following the demise of the Central College in 1947, the Baptist Missionary Association of Arkansas bought the campus and opened the Conway Baptist College, renamed in 1962 to Central Baptist College.


Henderson State University

Originally founded as the Arkadelphia Methodist College in 1890, the schol was renamed for Chares Christopher Henderson and offered to the state of Arkansas in 1929. The school includes Governor Sid McMath of Arkansas as an alumnus, and Billy Bob Thorton as an former student.


Hendrix College

A private, liberal-arts college, Hendrix College nestled north of Little Rock is consistently ranked in the top tiers of liberal-arts colleges in the United States.


Ouachita Baptist University

Founded: 1886 Ouachita Baptist

Colors: Blue-Violet, Old Gold

Location: Arkadelphia
Nestled in Arkadelphia in the southwest part of the state along the Ouachita River, Ouachita Baptist University has as small student population of almost 1,500, but can boast two governor alums: Governor William Holloway of Oklahoma, and Governor Mike Huckabee of Arkansas (and Republican Presidential candidate). The school has an intense rivalry with fellow Arkadelphia school Henderson State, situated just across a small ravine from the campus. It claims to have the fifth oldest rivalry in college sports dating back to a first meeting in 1895.


Philander Smith College

Founded in 1877, Philander Smith College is the result of the first attempt west of the Mississippi River to make education available to freedmen (former African American slaves). The forerunner of the college was Walden Seminary, named in honor of Dr. J.M. Walden, one of the originators and the first corresponding secretary of the Freedmen's Aid Society.  


Southern Arkansas University

Originally established in 1909 as the Third District Agricultural School, a high school, the school added 2 year college courses in 1925, renaming as the Agricultural and Mechanical College, Third District (Magnolia A&M). With the addition of third and fourth year college work, the school renamed again in 1951 as Southern State College, and finally as Southern Arkansas University in 1975 when the Masters of Education was added. The mulerider mascot is unique to the school. Tommy Tuberville, coach for Auburn and Ole Miss earned his undergraduate education here.


University of Arkansas at Little Rock

Founded: 1927 UALR
Nickname/Mascot: Trojans
Colors: Maroon, Silver
Motto: Cultus, Veritas, Scienta
Location: Little Rock
Staring out as Little Rock Junior College, the school went private in 1957 as Little Rock University. It returned to public status in 1969 as it joined the University of Arkansas System.


University of Arkansas at Montiecello

Nickname/Mascot: Boll Weevils
Colors: Green, White

In the land of same mascots (tigers anyone) it's refreshing to see a different mascot, and one as different as the Boll Weevil gets high marks!


University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff

Founded: 1873 UAPB
Nickname/Mascot: Golden Lions
Colors: Black, Gold
Location: Pine Bluff
HBCU
UAPB is the oldest Historically Black College in the country, and the second oldest institution in Arkansas. It is a leader in Aquaculture.


University of Central Arkansas

Founded: 1907 University of Central Arkansas
Nickname/Mascot: Bears & Sugar Bears
Colors: Purple, Gray
Motto: You Belong
Location: Conway
Originally the Arkansas State Normal School, to properly train students to become teachers in the state, it became the Arkansas State Teacher College in 1925. As time changed the school was renamed the State College of Arkansas in 1967 and finally became the University of Central Arkansas in 1975. Notable alumni include actor Gil Gerard and basketball pro Scottie Pippin.
